Keitzer: Descend into heresy
16/03/11 || Habakuk
Due to the increasing amount of reader requests (0 and counting), we have set up an FAQ section about this album.
Why are you reviewing this?
Because label-sent shit to be covered was piling up.
Is it label-sent shit?
Label-sent yes, shit no. This stuff is actually quite alright, if you’re into some sort of grind-infused death metal.
Why did you pick this and not something else from the pile?
Because I had heard about Keitzer due to some connection they have to
Japanische Kampfhörspiele, who unfortunately are not among us anymore.
Keitzer’s sound is way more death metalish and straightforward – dare I
say “normal” – than the wackiness that JaKa was known for, though.
So, is Keitzer a German band? What does their name mean?
They are indeed, but their name doesn’t mean a thing in German. Sounds
like a mixture of “Kaiser” and “Ketzer” to me, which would make it some
sort of Emperoretic.
What are the best things about this album?
There is quite a bit of decent groove happening, and the guitars have a
nice sawing tone to them. The vocals are actually quite good, too, with a
raspy, kind of grindish scream.
What are the worst things about this album?
The brutality doesn’t exactly jump at the listener for some weird
production problem. The knobjob is fine more or less, especially the
bass sounds pretty damn good, but something about the drums sounds a bit
irritating. I think the kicks are a bit too high, which takes some of
the flow out of this during the frequent blasting sections.
What other bands could be cited as similar?
Coldworker, Misery Index with a bit of a stretch.
Now what is this FAQ shit anyway, have you run out of ideas?
Quite clearly.
What do you think about the cover?
It looks like the four horsemen are coming at you through your grandma’s curtains.
Is there anything else worth of note?
Nope.
